In June 1864, a group of the Tokugawa Shogunate's special police, known as the Shinsengumi, led by Kondo Isami, staged an attack on anti-shogunate ronin (masterless samurai) at Ikedaya, an inn operating in Kyoto at the time. This became known as the Ikedaya Incident. A stone monument marks the site of this famous incident.
